Dates, job titles and company names
Can I leave off old graduation dates to avoid age bias?
Yes, that is a common choice for experienced professionals. Many people remove graduation years for degrees earned long ago, so readers focus on recent experience rather than age.
Some countries have rules against age discrimination in hiring. For example, in the US, decisions must not be based on age for people aged 40 and over, and in the UK, age is a protected characteristic at work. That does not mean bias never happens, so it is reasonable to leave out details that are not needed.
Tips:
- Remove the year from old degrees, but keep the degree and institution.
- Summarise jobs older than about 15 years briefly or leave them off.
- Be ready to give dates if an application form asks.
