Career Resources

Plain-language guides on ATS basics, resume structure and tailoring your resume honestly. Written to help, with no promises of interviews.

What is an ATS?

An applicant tracking system stores and sorts applications. Many parse your resume into fields (name, jobs, dates, skills) so recruiters can search. Clear headings, standard fonts, consistent dates and real text (not images) help parsing. What each system does with the result varies by employer.

Resume basics

  • Use reverse-chronological order for experience.
  • Use standard headings: Work Experience, Education, Skills.
  • Keep one date format throughout.
  • Avoid text boxes, tables and images for key information.
  • Save and send as PDF unless the employer asks otherwise.

Tailoring honestly

Read the advert, note the skills it asks for, and make sure the ones you truly have are easy to find in your resume. Do not add skills you do not have.
