Dates, job titles and company names

Should I use a company's legal name or its brand name on my resume?

Use the name most people would recognise, and add the other if it helps. Many companies trade under a brand that differs from their legal name, and recruiters search for the familiar one.

Examples:

  • "City Mart (Al Noor Retail LLC)"
  • "BrightCare Clinics (part of [Healthcare Group])"

Tips:

  • Use the legal name if your experience letter or contract shows it and you expect a background check; add the brand in brackets for clarity.
  • Keep the same version in every resume and application form.
  • Do not invent a link to a bigger, better-known company that you did not work for.

For background checks, employers usually need the legal entity, so keep it in your records even if you show the brand on your resume. If someone asks, you can explain the relationship in a sentence.
