Dates, job titles and company names
What is the best date format for an ATS-friendly resume?
Use month and year, written the same way for every entry, such as "Mar 2021 to Present" or "March 2021 – June 2024". This is clear to recruiters and is the format applicant tracking systems most commonly handle well when they try to work out how long you held each job.
Good, consistent options:
- "Jan 2022 – Present"
- "January 2022 to Present"
- "01/2022 – 05/2024" (numbers only, less clear across countries)
Tips:
- Pick one style and use it everywhere: jobs, education, certifications and projects.
- Keep the dates on the same line as the job title or employer.
- Use a simple dash or the word "to" between the dates.
Avoid formats that are easy to misread, such as "3/4/22", which means different dates in different countries, or ranges written only in words, such as "Spring last year". If a portal shows your parsed job history, check that the dates came through correctly and fix any errors before submitting.
