Fonts, sizes and text styling for ATS

What text checks should I do before exporting my resume?

Run a short text check in your document before you export:

  • Fonts: one or two standard fonts, no leftovers from a template.
  • Bullets: built-in bullet lists with a simple round bullet, no symbol-font bullets.
  • Special characters: names, accents, dashes and symbols look right; no "©" or "½" added by AutoCorrect by mistake.
  • Capitalisation: acronyms and tool names in their correct case; bullets start consistently.
  • Leftovers: no [bracketed] placeholders, stray asterisks or hash signs, highlights, strikethrough or comments.
  • Hidden text: none, checked with Word's Inspect Document.
  • Links: visible addresses, readable underscores.
  • Spelling: spellcheck reviewed, then a slow read-through aloud.

After exporting, finish with the copy-and-paste test on the PDF and search for two or three key terms. If everything comes out as you wrote it, your text is ready for both software and people.
