How ATS parsing reads your resume

I can't select or copy any text in my resume PDF. Is that a problem?

Yes, a serious one. If you cannot select text, the PDF is almost certainly an image, for example a scan, a photo or a file exported "as image". An ATS may extract nothing, leaving your profile empty or blank apart from what you type into the form.

What to do:

  • Find the original document (Word, Google Docs or builder) and export a new PDF using "Save as PDF" or "Export to PDF".
  • If you only have the scan, retype the resume in a word processor or resume builder. Optical character recognition tools can help, but check every line for errors.
  • Do not "print to image" or flatten the file.

Then repeat the test: you should be able to highlight words and copy them.
