Section headings ATS software recognises

What happens if an ATS does not recognise one of my section headings?

The content usually still exists in the system, but it may be placed in the wrong field or left in a general text area. For example, jobs under an unusual heading might not appear in your parsed work history, so a recruiter looking at your profile sees gaps or has to open the original file.

The exact result depends on the product and how the employer has set it up, so it is impossible to predict precisely. That is why plain headings are the low-risk choice.

To reduce the chance of problems:

  • Use common headings such as "Work Experience" and "Education".
  • Check your parsed profile if the application form shows it, and correct any fields.
  • Keep the same information in the original file so a human can see it.
