Skills sections that work for ATS and recruiters
How can I find the standard names for skills in my occupation?
Look at how employers and official occupation databases describe your job, and use their wording. Standard names help recruiters searching for your skills and make your resume easier to understand across countries.
Good sources:
- O*NET OnLine, a free database from the U.S. Department of Labor, describes hundreds of occupations with their typical tasks, skills, tools and technology. It is useful for wording even if you are not applying in the USA.
- Job adverts for your role from several employers.
- Professional bodies and certification syllabuses in your field.
- Job descriptions from your own employer.
How to use them:
- Search for your occupation and note the skills and tools listed.
- Compare them with what you actually do.
- Replace informal or company-specific wording on your resume with the standard terms.
Example: you wrote "fixing customer computer issues". Standard wording might be "desktop support", "troubleshooting" and "ticket management". Only adopt terms that are true for your work.
