Tailoring a resume to each job posting

How do I tailor my summary for a specific job? Can you give an example?

Rewrite it in two to four lines that name the role, your most relevant experience and one or two strengths the posting stresses. The summary is the quickest place to show fit.

Formula: role or title + years and area + two matching strengths + what you bring.

Posting: "Marketing Executive, FMCG, managing social media campaigns and retail promotions."

Generic summary: "Hard-working marketing professional with good communication skills seeking a challenging role."

Tailored summary: "Marketing executive with three years in FMCG, running social media campaigns and in-store promotions for food and beverage brands across the UAE. Skilled in Meta Ads, campaign reporting and working with retail partners."

The tailored version names the industry, the two main duties and relevant tools, all of which are true for this person. For a different posting, such as a B2B marketing role, the same person would lead with different true strengths.

Keep your summary specific and avoid generic adjectives, which every applicant uses.
