What an ATS is and what it does

Do applicant tracking systems use AI to judge resumes?

Some do, to different degrees, and many do not in any meaningful way. Newer products may include features that suggest matching candidates, summarise profiles or compare a resume with a job description. Older or simpler systems mainly store applications and let recruiters search by keywords and filters.

What is honestly known is limited: vendors rarely publish how their matching works, and each employer chooses which features to turn on. So it is wise not to trust anyone who claims to know exactly how "the AI" scores you.

What works across all of them:

  • Clear, accurate job titles and skills in plain text.
  • Wording that reflects the job description where it truly describes your experience.
  • Results and context that a human reviewer will find convincing.
