Freelance, self-employment and gig work
How do I list freelance work on my resume as a proper job entry?
Give it the same structure as any job: a clear role title, a business name or "Self-employed", location, dates and achievement bullets. Freelance work is real experience, and presenting it like a job helps readers and applicant tracking systems understand it.
Example:
"Freelance Content Writer, Self-employed, Dubai (remote), Jan 2022 – Present
- Wrote website copy and blog articles for 15 clients in property, travel and education.
- Kept a repeat-client base, with most new work coming from referrals.
- Managed briefs, deadlines and invoices for up to six projects at a time."
Tips:
- Use a title that describes the work, such as "Freelance Graphic Designer" or "Independent IT Consultant".
- Show the type and number of clients if you cannot name them.
- Add one line about the business side if relevant, such as finding clients or managing budgets.
- Keep dates continuous if the business ran continuously, even with quiet months.
Do not make the work sound bigger than it was. Honest scale is easy to explain at interview.
