Explaining employment gaps

How do I handle a gap of more than two years on my resume?

Label it clearly, show what you did and refresh your skills before applying. A long gap is easier to accept when the reader can see the reason in a few words and evidence that you are ready now.

Steps:

  • Add a career break entry with honest dates and a short label.
  • Include courses, volunteering, freelance work or projects from the period, or from the last few months.
  • Use a hybrid layout so your skills and achievements appear first.
  • Update your skills list with current tools and terms in your field.
  • Prepare a short interview answer that ends on why you are ready.

Example: "Career break – family care | 2021 – 2024

  • Completed CompTIA A+ certification (2024)."

If the gap is very long, you may also find returner programmes worth exploring.
