Gaps for caregiving, health, study, travel or relocation

Do I have to tell employers that my gap was for health reasons?

No. You can describe the period simply as a career break or "personal reasons" and keep your health private. A resume is not the place for medical information.

Options:

  • "Career break" with dates.
  • "Career break – personal reasons".
  • "Career break – health (now ready to return to work)", only if you are comfortable mentioning health in general terms.

If an interviewer asks, you can say: "I took some time out for a personal matter that is now resolved, and I'm ready to commit fully to this role."

If you need adjustments at work because of a condition, you can decide whether and when to discuss that with the employer. That is a separate conversation from explaining your resume, and the choice is yours.
