Returning to work after a long break
What is a returner programme or returnship, and is it worth applying for one?
A returner programme (often called a returnship) is a paid, fixed-term placement for people coming back after a long career break, usually two years or more. It is often worth applying if you want to return to a professional role and would value structured support.
What they typically offer, though each employer's scheme differs:
- A placement of a few months in a real role at your experience level.
- Training, mentoring or coaching to refresh skills and confidence.
- A group of other returners starting at the same time.
- In many schemes, the chance of a permanent role at the end, though this is not always promised.
They are run mainly by larger employers in sectors such as finance, technology, engineering, law and the public sector. Read each programme's eligibility rules on the employer's page, because break length and level requirements vary.
Your resume for a returnship should show your pre-break experience clearly, any recent learning, and a short summary that says you are returning after a planned break and what you want to do next.
