How do I answer competency questions like "Describe a time when…" on a form?

Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. It gives reviewers a clear, complete example they can score against the competency.

How to structure it:

  • Situation: one or two sentences of context.
  • Task: what you were responsible for.
  • Action: what you personally did, in detail. This is the largest part.
  • Result: the outcome, with numbers or feedback if possible, and what you learned.

Example (teamwork): "Our warehouse team was behind on a large order before Eid (S). I had to reorganise picking for the shift (T). I split the team into zones and paired new staff with experienced pickers (A). We completed the order a day early with no picking errors reported (R)."

Use "I" rather than "we" for your actions, and choose a different example for each question.
