Online application forms
What is a person specification and how should I use it on a form?
A person specification lists the skills, qualifications and qualities the employer wants, often split into "essential" and "desirable". Forms, especially in the public sector, education and healthcare, are often scored against it, so your answers should address each point.
How to use it:
- Copy the criteria into your notes.
- Find one concrete example for each essential criterion, and for as many desirable ones as you can.
- In a supporting statement, use the criteria as headings or address them in the same order.
- Use the same key terms so reviewers can see where you meet each one.
Example heading: "Experience of managing budgets (essential): I managed a departmental budget for a team of 12…"
Missing an essential criterion often leads to rejection, so do not skip any.
