Cover letter basics

Do I still need a cover letter in 2026?

Often yes, but not always. If the job advert or application form asks for one, it is required in practice, and leaving it out can count against you. If it is marked optional, a short, well-targeted letter is usually worth sending, because it gives you space to explain things a resume cannot.

A cover letter is most useful when:

  • The employer asks for one, or the form has an upload field for it.
  • You are applying directly by email to a hiring manager.
  • You need to explain context, such as relocating, changing field or why this company matters to you.
  • The role involves writing, client contact or communication.

You can usually skip it when the form gives no place to add one, or the advert says not to send one. Practices differ by employer, industry and country, so always follow the instructions on the job advert first.

If you do write one, keep it brief and specific. A generic letter adds little; a tailored one can help a reader decide to call you.
