Preparing references

How should executives prepare references?

Prepare a short list of senior referees who can speak about strategic results, leadership and stakeholder relationships, and expect deeper and sometimes informal checks. At senior level, references can play a large part in the final decision.

Good executive referees:

  • A former CEO, board member or direct superior.
  • A peer executive who worked with you on major initiatives.
  • A senior direct report who can describe your leadership.
  • A key client or partner, where appropriate.

Brief each referee on the specific role and organisation, and agree which achievements each will speak to. For example, one referee might cover a turnaround you led, while another covers how you built and developed your leadership team. Keep confidentiality in mind, especially if your current organisation does not know you are looking, and ask the search firm or employer to agree the timing of any calls with you first.
