Tailoring a cover letter

How can I find the hiring manager's name for my cover letter?

Check the job advert first, then the company's website and professional networking sites. If those do not work, a polite enquiry to the company can help.

Places to look:

  • The job advert: sometimes it names the hiring manager or gives a contact name.
  • The application email address, which may include a name.
  • The company website's team, leadership or department pages.
  • Professional networking sites: search for the company and the department, for example "Head of Finance" or "Talent Acquisition".
  • A short phone call or email to reception: "Could you tell me who is handling applications for the Procurement Officer role?"

Check that the person is current and in the right department. If you find several possible names and cannot confirm the right one, a neutral greeting such as "Dear Hiring Manager" is safer than guessing.

Using the right name shows effort, but not having one will not count against you. Many applications are sent with neutral greetings.
