Can I write paragraphs instead of bullet points in my job entries?
You can, but bullets are usually better. Bullet points are faster to read, make achievements stand out, and are what most employers expect for work experience.
When a short paragraph can work:
- A one- or two-line description of the company or the scope of your role, placed before the bullets.
- A professional summary at the top of the resume.
- Academic CVs, where research descriptions are sometimes written as short paragraphs.
When to use bullets:
- Responsibilities and achievements in each job.
- Projects with clear results.
A good pattern combines both: one short line of context, then three to six bullets.
Example:
"Led the accounts team for a 200-employee trading company.
- Closed monthly accounts within five working days.
- Introduced a supplier reconciliation checklist that reduced payment disputes."
Large blocks of text in the experience section are often skimmed or skipped, so keep any paragraph short.
