Choosing and organising resume sections

How do I decide which section should come first?

Put your strongest evidence for the job closest to the top. Readers form their first impression from the top half of page one, so lead with what matters most to them.

A simple rule:

  • If your work experience is your strongest selling point, put Work Experience first after the summary.
  • If you are a student or recent graduate, Education often leads, followed by Projects or Internships.
  • If a qualification is required for the job, such as a nursing licence or engineering registration, consider putting Certifications or a Licences section near the top.
  • If you are changing careers, recent Professional Training or Projects in the new field may come before older jobs.

Contact details always come first, and a short summary usually follows them.

On ResumeBuilder.ae you can reorder sections, so you can adjust the order for each application. After reordering, read the first half of page one as if you were the employer: does it show your best match for this job?
