Creative vs conservative designs
What is the difference between a creative resume and a conservative resume?
A conservative resume uses a plain, single-column layout with standard headings, one or two fonts and little or no colour, while a creative resume uses visual design (colour blocks, icons, unusual layouts or graphics) to show personality.
The content can be identical. The difference is how much the design itself is part of the message:
- Conservative: black text, clear headings such as "Work Experience" and "Education", dates aligned to one side, generous white space.
- Creative: accent colours, sidebars, custom headings, timelines, skill graphics or a personal logo.
Conservative designs are the safer default for most applications because they are easy for both people and applicant tracking systems to read. Creative designs can help in roles where visual judgement is part of the job, such as graphic design, branding or some marketing roles, but they need care so the content stays readable.
