Listing languages
How do I list languages on my resume?
List each language with a clear proficiency level, in a short Languages section, starting with the language most relevant to the job.
Example:
"Languages
Arabic – Native
English – Fluent (IELTS 7.5)
French – Intermediate (B1)"
Tips:
- Use one level system and keep it consistent.
- Add a recognised test or certificate if you have one.
- Be honest: employers may test you or hold an interview in that language.
- Leave out languages you only know a few words of.
The Languages section usually goes near the end of the resume, after education or skills. If a language is a key requirement for the job, also mention it in your summary so it is seen early.
Use the same language names throughout, written in English on an English resume, such as "German" rather than "Deutsch".
