What do the CEFR levels A1 to C2 mean?
CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is an international scale with six levels, from beginner to near-native.
- A1 Beginner: simple phrases and introductions.
- A2 Elementary: everyday expressions, simple tasks.
- B1 Intermediate: handle most travel and familiar topics; simple texts.
- B2 Upper intermediate: work and discuss complex topics with some fluency.
- C1 Advanced: use the language flexibly and effectively at work and in study.
- C2 Proficient: near-native understanding and expression.
On a resume, write the level next to the language: "German – B2". Employers in Europe know this scale well, and it is increasingly used elsewhere. If you have not taken a test, choose the level that honestly matches what you can do, using official CEFR descriptions as a guide.
Avoid giving yourself a level higher than you can show in an interview.
