Personal details on a resume
Should I put my passport number on my resume?
No. Never put your passport number on a resume. It is sensitive identity information, and a resume is shared, forwarded and stored by many people you do not know.
Why it is risky:
- Passport details can be misused for identity fraud.
- Your resume may end up on job boards, recruiters' databases or email chains.
- Employers do not need it to decide whether to interview you.
If an employer genuinely needs your passport details, such as for a visa application after an offer, they will ask through a formal, secure process. Be cautious of anyone asking for a passport copy before an interview; check that the company and role are real first.
The same applies to copies of your passport: do not attach them to a first application. Keep a scanned copy ready for when a verified employer requests it at the offer or visa stage.
