The skills section

How many skills should I list on my resume?

Usually between 8 and 15 skills in the skills section, chosen for the job you are applying to. Fewer, well-chosen skills are more convincing than a long list.

Guidelines:

  • Entry-level resumes often have 6 to 10.
  • Experienced or technical resumes may have more, grouped under short headings.
  • Every skill should be something you could discuss or demonstrate in an interview.

A list of 30 skills makes it hard for the reader to see what you are actually strong in, and some items will look padded. If you have many tools and technologies, group them (for example "Languages", "Frameworks", "Cloud") rather than writing one long line. Cut anything outdated, basic for your level, or unrelated to the job.

Quality beats quantity: a short, relevant list is easier to trust and easier to discuss.
