Campus placements and graduate programmes

What is a graduate scheme?

A graduate scheme is a structured entry-level programme, often lasting one to three years, that employers run to recruit and train new graduates. It is common in the UK and some other countries, especially in large companies, professional services and the public sector.

Typical features:

  • A set intake, usually recruiting a year ahead.
  • Training and sometimes a professional qualification.
  • Rotations through different teams or departments.
  • A formal application process: online form, tests, video interview and assessment centre.

The details differ by employer, so read each scheme's page for eligibility, start date and selection stages. Your CV is often only one part of the application.

Graduate schemes are not the only route into a career. Many smaller employers hire graduates into ordinary entry-level jobs all year round, with a simpler process. It is worth applying to both, especially if a scheme's deadlines have already passed.
