ATS myths and misconceptions
Is it true that most resumes are rejected by an ATS before a human ever sees them?
That claim is widely repeated, often with a precise-sounding number, but there is no reliable public evidence for it, and it treats every employer as if they used the same settings. Treat it as a myth.
What is generally known:
- An applicant tracking system mainly stores and organises applications. Recruiters search, sort and review them.
- Automatic rejection, where it happens, often comes from knockout questions the employer sets, such as "Do you have the right to work in this country?" or "Do you hold a valid nursing licence?"
- How much screening is automated varies widely between employers and job adverts.
Why the myth matters: it scares people into tricks like keyword stuffing or ugly plain-text resumes. A better use of your energy is to answer screening questions honestly, use a clear layout that software can read, and match your real experience to the job's language. Those steps help both with software search and with the human who reads your resume next.
