ATS myths and misconceptions
Are two-column resumes automatically rejected by applicant tracking systems?
No, there is no automatic rejection for using columns. The risk is that some parsers read across both columns line by line, mixing your skills with your job history, which can make your profile messy for a recruiter.
How to decide:
- For online portals and large employers, a single-column layout is the safer default.
- A two-column design can work when you email a recruiter directly or hand over printed copies.
- If you use columns, keep contact details and work history in the main column, and test the text order.
ResumeBuilder.ae labels two-column layouts as more complex and suggests single-column templates as the safest default for applicant tracking systems.
To test any layout, copy all the text from the PDF into a plain text editor. If your job titles, employers and dates come out together in a sensible order, the columns are not causing serious trouble. If skills are mixed into the middle of your job history, switch to one column for online applications.
