Dates, job titles and company names

How do I write the dates for the job I am still doing?

Write the start month and year, followed by "Present". This is the standard way to show a current role, and recruiters and most systems recognise it.

Example: "Site Engineer, Gulf Build Contracting, Abu Dhabi | Apr 2021 – Present"

Tips:

  • Use the same separator as your other dates, such as a dash or "to".
  • Write current-job bullets in the present tense ("Manage", "Lead") and past jobs in the past tense.
  • Update it as soon as the job ends, so you do not send an outdated resume.

Avoid leaving the end date blank, which can look like a mistake.

If you hold two current roles at the same time, such as a main job and a part-time teaching post, both can show "Present". Make the main one clear by listing it first. Many application portals also have a "current job" tick box; tick it for the same role you mark as "Present" on your resume, so the two match. When you change jobs, remember to update the old entry everywhere: your resume, any saved portal profiles and your online profiles.
