I am a graphic designer. Shouldn't my resume show my design skills?

Your portfolio should show your design skills; your resume should be easy to read. Many design employers still use applicant tracking systems, and a resume that software cannot read may never reach the creative director.

A balanced approach:

  • Use a clean, well-typeset, single-column resume with thoughtful fonts, spacing and one accent colour. Good typography is itself design.
  • Avoid skill bars, icons, charts and text inside shapes.
  • Put a clear portfolio link near the top, written as text.
  • Let the portfolio carry the visual work, with case studies.

Example header line: "Graphic Designer | Brand identity, packaging | Portfolio: behance.net/username"

Design-led studios that ask for creative applications may welcome a more expressive version, but keep a readable one ready for portals. Restraint and clarity often impress designers more than decoration.
