Career change resume basics

I have no paid experience in my new field. Can I still apply?

Yes, especially for entry-level or junior roles. Many employers hiring at that level look for relevant skills, learning and attitude rather than years in the field.

Build your resume around what you do have:

  • Training and certificates in the new field.
  • Projects that show you can do the core tasks.
  • Volunteer, unpaid or informal work, labelled honestly.
  • Transferable experience from your old jobs, such as client handling, planning or reporting.

Read each job ad carefully. If it lists something as essential that you do not have, such as a licence, you may not be considered. If it asks for experience "or equivalent", projects and training may count.

Apply widely to suitable roles and adjust each resume to the ad. A clear summary explaining your move helps the reader see the connection quickly.
