Career change resume basics

What is a career-change resume and how is it different from a normal resume?

A career-change resume is built around the job you want next, not the job you have done the longest. A standard resume usually lists experience in date order and lets the job titles speak for themselves. When you change fields, your titles often do not match the new role, so the resume has to do more explaining.

The main differences:

  • A summary at the top that names your target role and links your background to it.
  • Relevant evidence placed first: projects, training, volunteer work or the parts of your old job that match the new one.
  • Old roles kept, but shortened and focused on the skills that carry over.
  • Skills and terms that match the new field's job descriptions, used honestly.

Everything else stays the same: clear headings, dates, contact details and a clean layout. The goal is that a reader in the new field understands within the first half page why you are a credible candidate, even though your past job titles come from somewhere else.
