Career Changes and Employment Gaps
Freelance, self-employment and gig work – Page 3
How much detail should freelance work get compared with a regular job?
Give it the same weight as a regular job of similar length and relevance: usually three to five bullets for a recent, relevant freelance role, and fewer for older or unrelated work. Detail should follow relevance, not employment type.
Guidelines:
- Recent and relevant freelance work: full entry with achievements, tools and client types.
- Short or side freelance work: one or two bullets.
- Unrelated freelance work: a single line, or leave it out if it does not affect your dates.
Avoid two common mistakes. The first is listing every small client and task, which makes the entry long and unfocused. The second is hiding freelance work in a single vague line when it is actually your strongest recent experience.
Example of a balanced entry: three bullets covering the type of clients, your best result and the business skills you used.
