Freelance, self-employment and gig work
Should I call myself a freelancer, consultant, contractor or owner?
Choose the word that matches how you worked and what employers in your field expect. Each suggests a slightly different arrangement.
General use:
- Freelancer: project-based work for several clients, common in creative and writing fields.
- Consultant: advice or specialist services, often for businesses, at a professional level.
- Contractor: longer engagements, often full-time for one client for a set period.
- Owner or founder: you ran a business with its own name, and possibly staff or products.
Example: "Independent HR Consultant" fits if you advised companies on HR; "Freelance HR Assistant" fits if you did admin tasks.
Avoid a grander word than the work justifies. Readers notice when "consultant" means occasional small jobs.
It also helps to include the profession in the title, because recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for it. "Freelance Accountant" will match more accounting roles than "Independent Professional".
