Experienced and older job seekers

I wrote my resume many years ago. What should I change to make it look current?

Rewrite the structure as well as the content: today's resumes are shorter, focused on achievements and tailored to each job. Simply adding your latest role to an old document often leaves dated features in place.

Common updates:

  • Replace an "Objective" with a two- to four-line professional summary.
  • Remove "References available upon request"; employers assume you will provide them.
  • Drop fax numbers, full postal address and personal details such as marital status, unless the country you apply in expects them.
  • Add a LinkedIn link if your profile is up to date.
  • Turn duty lists into achievement bullets with results.
  • Use a clean, single-column layout with a standard font and clear headings.
  • Shorten older roles and remove outdated software.

Importing your old file into a builder can save typing, but check every section carefully and rewrite rather than copy.
