United States CV and resume guidance
Is the one-page resume rule strict in the US?
No, it is a common guideline rather than a rule. One page usually suits students, recent graduates and people with a few years of experience. Two pages is widely accepted for experienced professionals, and senior executives or technical specialists sometimes use more.
A practical guide:
- Student or entry level: one page.
- About five or more years of relevant experience: one or two pages.
- Federal government jobs, academic CVs and some senior roles: follow the announcement or field norms.
What matters is that every line is relevant. A tight two-page resume is better than a crowded one-page resume with tiny font and no white space. The US Department of Labor's CareerOneStop resume guide covers formatting and length choices in more detail.
