Tailoring a cover letter

How do I research a company before writing my cover letter?

Spend fifteen to thirty minutes on a few reliable sources, looking for facts you can connect to your own experience. You need one or two specific details, not a full report.

Where to look:

  • The company website: "About us", products or services, recent news and the careers page.
  • Recent news articles or press releases about projects, openings or launches.
  • The company's professional networking pages and social media posts.
  • The job advert itself, which often describes the team and its priorities.
  • People you know who work there or have worked with them.

What to note:

  • What the company does and who its customers are.
  • Recent developments, such as a new branch, product or contract.
  • Values or ways of working they mention often.

Example of using research:
"I read that your clinic group has opened two new branches in Sharjah this year. Having helped set up the reception and booking process for a new clinic in my current role, I would like to support your growth."

Use only information you are confident is accurate and public. Avoid quoting internal details or rumours.
