Cover Letters and Job Applications
Opening paragraphs
The first few lines of a cover letter decide whether the reader keeps going. This guide explains how to write an opening paragraph that names the role, gives a clear reason you fit and avoids tired clichés. It covers mentioning referrals, recruiters and conversations, opening with an achievement or knowledge of the company, and turning a generic first sentence into a specific one. You will also find many short, fictional example openings for different jobs and levels, from students and fresh graduates to nurses, engineers, sales staff and senior executives, to adapt to your own experience.
How should I start a cover letter?
Start by naming the job you want and giving one strong reason you fit it, all within the first two sentences. The reader should know immediately what you are applying for and why they should keep reading.
A strong opening paragraph usually includes:
- The exact job title, and the reference number if there is one.
- A specific qualification, achievement or link to the employer.
- Optionally, how you heard about the role, especially through a referral.
Example: "I am applying for the Operations Coordinator role at Falcon Freight. In my current role at a regional courier company, I schedule over 60 daily pickups and recently reduced missed collections by redesigning our booking form."
Example for a graduate: "I would like to apply for your Graduate Trainee Programme in Finance. As a recent BCom graduate who completed an internship in accounts receivable, I am keen to build my career in a company with a strong training culture like yours."
Avoid starting with long background about yourself or general statements about your personality. Get to the point, then let your middle paragraphs give the detail.
What is a good first sentence for a cover letter?
A good first sentence names the role and adds something specific about you or the employer. It should be clear, confident and impossible to send to any other company unchanged.
Fictional examples across different jobs:
- "I am applying for the Staff Nurse role on your cardiac ward, where my four years in a coronary care unit would let me contribute from day one."
- "Your advert for a Junior Data Analyst caught my attention because I have spent the past year building sales dashboards in Power BI for a retail chain."
- "Having managed front desk operations at a 200-room city hotel, I would like to apply for your Front Office Supervisor position."
- "Ahmed Saleh, your Regional Sales Manager, suggested I apply for the Key Account Executive role."
- "I am excited to apply for the Primary Teacher position at Greenfield International School, as your inquiry-based curriculum matches the way I have taught Grade 3 for five years."
Each sentence tells the reader the role and a reason to keep reading. Choose the style that fits your strongest point: experience, a referral, a relevant achievement or a genuine link to the employer.
Is "I am writing to apply for..." a bad way to start a cover letter?
It is not wrong, but it is very common and wastes the first words on something the reader already knows. You can keep the clarity while adding a reason to read on.
Compare:
- Plain: "I am writing to apply for the position of Marketing Executive."
- Stronger: "I am applying for the Marketing Executive role because I have spent two years running social campaigns for consumer brands, and your new skincare launch is exactly the kind of work I enjoy."
If you do use "I am writing to apply", make sure the same sentence or the next one contains something specific. A clear but plain opening is far better than a clever one that confuses the reader.
Which clichés should I avoid in a cover letter opening?
Avoid phrases that could appear in anyone's letter, because they take up space without telling the reader anything about you.
Common clichés:
- "I am a hard-working, results-driven team player."
- "I believe I am the perfect candidate for this position."
- "I have always dreamed of working for your company."
- "Please accept this letter as my application."
- "I am writing to express my interest in..." followed by nothing specific.
Replace them with facts:
- Instead of "results-driven": "I increased repeat bookings at our salon by introducing a loyalty card."
- Instead of "perfect candidate": "I meet each of the four requirements in your advert, including three years of AutoCAD drafting."
How do I mention a referral in the opening of a cover letter?
Name the person and their role in the first sentence, then quickly connect the referral to your fit for the job. A referral catches attention, but your qualifications still need to follow straight away.
Steps:
- Ask the person's permission before naming them.
- Use their full name and job title or team.
- Say briefly why they suggested you, if relevant.
- Follow with your strongest qualification in the next sentence.
Examples:
- "Sara Al Kaabi, Senior Engineer in your Structures team, suggested I apply for the Graduate Civil Engineer role. We worked together on a university bridge design project, and she felt my site internship would suit your team."
- "On the recommendation of Michael Tan in your Finance department, I am applying for the Accounts Payable Officer position. I have processed supplier invoices in SAP for three years and recently helped clear a backlog before year-end."
Keep the referral to one sentence. Do not exaggerate your relationship or imply the person has endorsed you more strongly than they have. Also follow the company's referral process if it has one, as your contact may need to submit your details internally.
Should I say where I saw the job advert in the first paragraph?
Yes, briefly, when it helps. Mentioning where you saw the advert shows which vacancy you mean and can be useful to employers tracking where applicants come from. Keep it to a few words, not a full sentence.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Logistics Coordinator role advertised on your careers page."
- "I saw your opening for a Dental Assistant on a professional networking site and was pleased to see it is at your new Jumeirah clinic."
Do not let the source of the advert take over your opening. The main focus should still be your fit. If the role came through a referral or conversation, mention that instead, as it is more useful.
Should the opening paragraph state the exact job title?
Yes. Use the job title exactly as it appears in the advert, so the reader immediately knows which role you mean. Employers often hire for several roles at once.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Procurement Officer (Facilities) position, reference PO-311."
- "I would like to be considered for your Customer Experience Associate vacancy in Riyadh."
Avoid general phrases like "a suitable position in your company" unless you are writing a speculative letter. If you are applying for more than one role, it is usually better to send separate, tailored letters for each.
How long should the opening paragraph of a cover letter be?
Two to four sentences is ideal. The opening needs to state the role, give a strong reason you fit and, optionally, mention a referral or a link to the company. Anything more belongs in the body.
Example of a three-sentence opening:
"I am applying for the Payroll Specialist role at Orbit Healthcare. For the past four years I have run monthly payroll for 600 staff across three hospitals. I am keen to bring that experience to your growing network of clinics."
If your opening runs to six or more lines, move the detail into the next paragraph and keep the opening short and clear.
Should I start my cover letter with "My name is..."?
Usually no. Your name is already in the header and at the end of the letter, so "My name is Aisha and I am applying..." uses up your first words on information the reader already has.
Instead, start with the role and your strongest point:
- Instead of "My name is Kevin and I am a mechanical engineer," try "I am a mechanical engineer with five years of HVAC design experience, and I am applying for your Senior MEP Engineer role."
Introducing yourself by name is more natural in a short email to someone who does not have your CV yet. Even then, keep it brief and move quickly to why you are writing.
How do I open a cover letter with an achievement?
Choose one result that matches the job's main requirement and put it in the first or second sentence, with enough context to understand it. This shows value immediately.
Formula: role + achievement + link to the job.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Store Manager role. In the past year, I led my branch from the bottom third of the region to one of its top three stores for customer satisfaction."
- "Last quarter, I closed the largest new account in my team's history at Vertex Software, and I would like to bring that drive to your Enterprise Sales Executive role."
- "As a site engineer, I helped deliver a school extension two weeks ahead of schedule, and I am now applying for your Project Engineer position."
Keep the achievement true and something you can explain in an interview.
How can I open a cover letter by showing I know the company?
Mention something specific and recent about the employer, then connect it to your skills. This shows genuine interest and that you are not sending the same letter everywhere.
Sources of specific details: the company's website, news releases, products, services, new branches or projects.
Examples:
- "Your new same-day delivery service in Sharjah caught my attention, and as a dispatch coordinator who has organised express routes for two years, I would like to help it grow."
- "I read about your hospital's new paediatric wing, and with five years as a paediatric nurse, I am applying for the Charge Nurse role there."
Avoid vague praise like "your company is a leader in its field". One specific detail is more convincing than several general compliments.
How do I open a cover letter after meeting someone from the company at an event?
Mention the event and the person in the first sentence, then link the conversation to your interest in the role. This turns a brief meeting into a reason for the reader to pay attention.
Examples:
- "It was good to speak with Rania Youssef at the Dubai Careers Fair last week about your Graduate Engineering Programme, and our conversation about your solar projects encouraged me to apply."
- "Following my conversation with your Head of Marketing, Paul Mensah, at the Lagos Retail Summit, I am applying for the Brand Executive role."
Check the person's name and title, and only mention them if the conversation was genuine and they would remember you. Keep it to one sentence, then move to your qualifications.
What is a good cover letter opening for a fresh graduate?
Lead with your degree and the most relevant thing you did during it, such as an internship, project or part-time job, then link it to the role.
Examples:
- "As a recent Computer Science graduate from Manipal University, where my final-year project was a library booking app used by 300 students, I am applying for your Junior Developer role."
- "I am applying for the Graduate Management Trainee position. During my BBA, I completed a six-week internship in a bank's retail operations team, where I helped reconcile daily branch reports."
- "Having graduated in Nursing this summer and completed my clinical placement in an emergency department, I would like to apply for your Newly Qualified Nurse programme."
Graduates often have similar degrees, so the specific project or experience is what makes you stand out.
What is a strong cover letter opening for an experienced professional?
Combine your years in the field, your area of expertise and one relevant result in the first two sentences. Experienced candidates should show impact quickly, not list their whole history.
Examples:
- "With eight years in corporate banking and a portfolio of mid-sized manufacturing clients, I am applying for your Relationship Manager role."
- "I am applying for the Senior Business Analyst position. Over six years, I have led requirements gathering for three core banking system upgrades, each delivered on time."
- "As a procurement specialist who has managed supplier tenders for two hospital groups, I am keen to join your Category Manager team."
Choose the experience that matches the job most closely, even if it is not your most impressive achievement overall.
How should a senior executive open a cover letter?
Open with the scale of your leadership and a business-level result, then connect it to the organisation's direction. Executives are hired for impact, so the first lines should show it.
Examples:
- "As Chief Operating Officer of a 1,200-employee logistics group, I led its expansion into three new GCC markets, and I am applying for your Group COO role to support a similar growth plan."
- "I am applying for the position of Finance Director. Over the past five years, I have led the finance function through a merger and the introduction of a new ERP system across 14 entities."
- "Having turned around a loss-making hotel portfolio in East Africa, I was interested to read of your plans to reposition your resort brands."
Keep the tone confident and factual. Avoid self-praise; let scale and results speak.
What is a good opening line for a nursing cover letter?
Mention your specialty, your experience and the unit or hospital you are applying to. Nursing managers want to see clinical fit quickly.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Registered Nurse position in your Intensive Care Unit. I have four years of ICU experience, including caring for ventilated patients and supporting new graduate nurses."
- "As a paediatric nurse with three years on a busy children's ward, I was pleased to see your opening at the Al Noor Children's Hospital."
- "Having completed my nursing degree and a final placement in the operating theatre, I would like to apply for your Theatre Nurse trainee role."
If the advert asks for specific certifications, you can mention one key one in the opening, such as current BLS, and list the rest on your resume.
How should a teacher open a cover letter to a school?
Name the subject or grade level, your teaching experience, and something about the school that attracts you. Schools want both teaching fit and values fit.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Secondary Mathematics Teacher post. I have taught IGCSE Mathematics for five years and introduced weekly problem-solving clubs that drew strong participation."
- "Your school's focus on bilingual early-years education is what drew me to apply for the KG2 Homeroom Teacher role, as I have taught in English and Arabic for three years."
- "As a newly qualified English teacher who completed my training placement in a large state secondary school, I would like to apply for your Teacher of English position."
Mention the curriculum the school uses if it matches your experience.
What is a good opening for a software engineer's cover letter?
Lead with your core technologies and a real product or project you built, then connect it to the company's stack or product.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Backend Engineer role. For three years I have built payment APIs in Go and PostgreSQL for a fintech start-up, and your work on cross-border transfers is a natural next step for me."
- "As a frontend developer who rebuilt an e-commerce checkout in React that customers found much easier to use, I am excited about your Senior Frontend Engineer opening."
- "Your mobile banking app is one I use daily, and as an Android developer with four years of Kotlin experience, I would like to help build its next version."
Be specific about technologies the advert mentions, and keep jargon to what the reader needs.
How should an accountant open a cover letter?
State your qualification or level, your area of accounting and a clear example of accuracy or improvement. Finance managers look for reliability and relevant systems experience.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the General Accountant position. As an ACCA part-qualified accountant, I prepare monthly management accounts for a group of four companies and close the books within five working days."
- "With three years in accounts payable using Oracle, including clearing a backlog of supplier queries before an audit, I would like to apply for your AP Team Lead role."
- "As a recent Commerce graduate who supported year-end audits during my internship at a mid-sized audit firm, I am applying for your Junior Accountant vacancy."
Mention a specific system or standard if the advert asks for it.
What is a strong opening for a sales cover letter?
Open with a result, because sales roles are judged on results. Name the product or market you sold into and what you achieved, then link it to the role.
Examples:
- "Last year I exceeded my annual target for B2B software licences in the Saudi market, and I am applying for your Regional Sales Executive role to bring that experience to your team."
- "I am applying for the Car Sales Consultant position at Desert Motors. In two years at a multi-brand showroom, I built a list of repeat customers who regularly referred friends and family."
- "As a pharmaceutical sales representative covering 40 clinics in Kerala, I would like to apply for your Medical Representative role in cardiology."
Use figures that are true and that you can explain. If you cannot share exact numbers, describe the result clearly instead.
What is a good opening line for a customer service cover letter?
Lead with the type of customers you have supported, the channels you used, and one sign of your quality, such as resolving complaints or positive feedback.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Customer Service Representative role. For two years I have handled billing calls and live chat for a telecom provider, often taking escalated complaints from new team members."
- "Having worked at the information desk of a busy shopping mall, where I helped hundreds of visitors each day in English and Arabic, I would like to join your contact centre team."
- "I enjoy solving customer problems on the first call, and I am applying for your Customer Support Agent position to do just that for your online grocery customers."
Mention languages if the role serves customers in more than one.
How should I open a cover letter for a hotel or hospitality job?
Mention the type of property, your role and a guest-focused strength. Hospitality employers look for service attitude, reliability and experience with their kind of guests.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Guest Relations Executive role at your beach resort. For three years I have welcomed VIP guests at a five-star city hotel and handled special requests from check-in to departure."
- "As a waiter at a busy family restaurant, I regularly served large groups during weekend rushes, and I would like to apply for your Server position at the Marina branch."
- "Having trained as a commis chef and worked two seasons in a resort kitchen, I am applying for your Demi Chef de Partie vacancy."
Keep the tone warm but professional, reflecting the service you would give guests.
What is a good cover letter opening for an administrative assistant or receptionist?
Highlight organisation and communication, with a concrete example of the size or pace of the office you supported.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Administrative Assistant role in your Legal department. I currently support three managers in a busy law office, handling calendars, meeting rooms and document filing."
- "As a receptionist at a multi-specialty clinic, I greet up to 120 patients a day and manage appointment bookings for six doctors, and I would like to bring that experience to your front desk team."
- "Your advert for an Office Coordinator asks for someone who keeps things running smoothly; for the past two years I have done exactly that for a 40-person engineering consultancy."
Mention the software you use daily if the advert lists any.
How should a civil or site engineer open a cover letter?
State your discipline, the type and scale of projects you have worked on, and one delivery or safety result.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Site Engineer position on your residential tower project. I have supervised structural works on two high-rise buildings in Dubai, coordinating subcontractors and daily inspections."
- "As a graduate civil engineer who spent my internship on a highway interchange project, I would like to apply for your Junior Engineer role in infrastructure."
- "With seven years in road design and a recent role leading drainage design for a new industrial zone, I am interested in your Senior Highways Engineer opening."
Mention professional registration only if you hold it and it is relevant to the role.
What is a good opening for a marketing cover letter?
Lead with a campaign or channel you have worked on and what it achieved, then link it to the brand you are applying to.
Examples:
- "I am applying for the Digital Marketing Executive role. At a regional fashion retailer, I managed paid social campaigns that became our main source of new online customers."
- "Your recent rebrand caught my eye, and as a content marketer who led a similar refresh for a fitness chain, I would like to apply for your Content Lead position."
- "As a marketing graduate who grew my university society's Instagram following from scratch to a few thousand engaged students, I am applying for your Social Media Assistant role."
Marketing readers judge your writing closely, so make the opening as sharp as possible.
