Converting between PDF, Word and plain text

Can I open my PDF resume directly in Microsoft Word?

Yes, recent versions of Word can open a PDF and turn it into an editable document, but the result depends on the PDF's layout. Word shows a message that it is converting the file and that it may not look exactly like the original.

With a simple, single-column, text-based PDF the result is often usable. With two columns, side panels or decorative layouts, expect text boxes, broken lines and moved sections.

If you try it:

  • Save the result under a new name, so you keep the original PDF untouched.
  • Turn on "Show formatting marks" to see hidden breaks, tabs and spaces.
  • Go through a full check of content, spelling, spacing and page breaks before you send it.

If the conversion is poor, copying the text into a blank document is the reliable fallback.
