File names and file size

What is a good file name for my resume?

Use your full name and the document type, separated by hyphens, for example "Fatima-Rahman-Resume.pdf" or "Fatima-Rahman-CV.pdf". A recruiter downloading dozens of files can then find yours instantly.

A good file name:

  • Starts with your first and last name.
  • Says what the document is: CV, Resume or Cover-Letter.
  • Uses hyphens or underscores instead of spaces and symbols.
  • Has no version numbers or words like "final" or "new".

Optionally add the job title for a tailored version: "Fatima-Rahman-CV-Procurement-Officer.pdf". Keep it under about 60 characters so it is not cut off in email previews and portal lists.

Names like "resume.pdf", "CV2024 FINAL(3).pdf" or "Document1.pdf" are the most common mistakes. They look careless and can be overwritten if the recruiter saves several files with the same name into one folder.
