Templates for students, mid-career and executives

How should I design my resume when returning to work after a long break?

Use a clean, single-column template with a strong summary, a skills section near the top and an honest, simple way to show the break.

Design tips:

  • A summary that names your target role and key strengths, mentioning recent training if relevant.
  • A brief line for the break, for example: "Career break, 2020 - 2024: family care; completed an online project management course."
  • Recent courses, volunteering or freelance work in their own sections.
  • Your previous roles presented normally with achievements.

Avoid layouts designed to hide dates; they often draw more attention. A confident, clear layout tells employers you are ready to return.

If you kept skills current during the break, through volunteering, freelance projects or courses, give them proper entries with dates and a bullet or two. Those entries show employers you are active and ready, and they fill the timeline honestly.
