Resume length and number of pages

How long should a resume be, and when is a second or third page acceptable? This guide answers questions about resume length for students, graduates, mid-career professionals, executives and academics, and explains how expectations differ between regions such as the UAE and Gulf, India, the UK, North America and Australia. It also covers how to cut a resume down without losing important experience, what to put on page one, how to handle older roles, and how to fix awkward page breaks and half-empty pages.

How long should a resume be?

One to two pages suits most people. One page usually works for students, graduates and people with a few years of experience. Two pages is normal for experienced professionals with several relevant roles. Longer documents are common mainly for academic, medical and research CVs.

A practical guide:

  • Up to about five years of experience: aim for one page.
  • Five to fifteen years: one or two pages, depending on how much is relevant.
  • Senior managers and executives: two pages is common.
  • Academics, researchers and doctors: as long as needed to list publications, research and clinical work.

The right length is the shortest one that shows your relevant experience clearly. Every line should help the employer see why you fit the job. If a section does not support your application, cut it before adding a page. There is no rule that a resume must be exactly one page.

Is a two-page resume acceptable?

Yes. A two-page resume is widely accepted for professionals with enough relevant experience to fill it. Many employers, especially for mid-level, senior and technical roles, expect two pages.

Make a two-page resume work well:

  • Put your most important information on page one: summary, key skills and your most recent, relevant roles.
  • Fill at least half of page two; a few lines on page two looks unfinished.
  • Add your name and a page number on page two in case pages are separated.
  • Keep older roles brief.

If you are early in your career and your second page holds mostly coursework, hobbies or repeated points, cut it back to one page.

A two-page resume is not a sign of weakness or a lack of focus. It becomes a problem only when the extra page is filled with repetition, long duty lists or details unrelated to the job. Ask whether each section on page two adds evidence that you can do the job; if it does, the length is justified.

When is a three-page resume acceptable?

A three-page resume is acceptable mainly for senior executives with long, highly relevant careers, academics, doctors, researchers and some government or consulting roles where detailed project lists are expected. For most other applicants, three pages is too long.

If you are at three pages, check:

  • Are roles older than about 15 years described in detail? Shorten them.
  • Do several bullets repeat the same skill? Merge them.
  • Are there long lists of courses, tools or duties? Group or cut them.
  • Is there personal information that adds nothing? Remove it.

If, after editing, all three pages are relevant and strong, it can be fine, especially for senior or specialist roles. Make sure the first page alone gives a clear picture of who you are.

How long should a fresh graduate's resume be?

One page is enough for most fresh graduates. Employers want to see your degree, relevant projects or internships, skills and any work experience, and all of that usually fits on one well-organised page.

To make one page work:

  • Put education near the top with your degree, university and graduation year.
  • Choose two or three strong projects, internships or part-time jobs.
  • Group your skills on a few lines.
  • Leave out school-level details unless they are notable.

A second page is reasonable only if you have substantial relevant experience, such as several internships, research publications or a significant portfolio. Never add filler to reach a second page.

How long should my resume be with ten years of experience?

Two pages is usually right with around ten years of experience, although a tight one-page resume can work if your roles are similar or not all relevant. What matters is that your recent and relevant experience gets enough detail.

Allocate space by relevance:

  • The last five to seven years: full detail with three to six achievement bullets per role.
  • Older roles: one or two bullets each, or just title, company and dates.
  • Summary and skills: short and targeted.

If you find yourself writing about every task in every role, focus on achievements instead. A ten-year resume should show progression and results, not a complete job history.

How long should an executive resume be?

Two pages is the most common length for an executive resume, and three can be acceptable for very senior leaders with extensive, relevant achievements. The first page carries the most weight, so it should make your level and impact clear immediately.

Structure for executives:

  • Page one: executive summary, core leadership areas, and your most recent senior roles with headline results.
  • Page two: earlier leadership roles, board positions, education and selected certifications.

Keep earlier career roles brief. Executive readers want to see scope, such as budget, team size and markets, and outcomes, not daily duties.

Example: "Led regional operations across four GCC countries with a team of 350, improving on-time delivery from 88 to 97 out of 100 orders."

How long should an academic CV be?

An academic CV has no fixed length. It grows with your career and commonly runs several pages, because it lists publications, research, teaching, grants, conference presentations, supervision and service.

Guidelines:

  • Early-career researchers and PhD candidates: often two to four pages.
  • Established academics: can be much longer.
  • Always follow length limits if the institution or funder sets one.

Keep it organised with clear headings, consistent citation style and reverse chronological order within each section. If you apply for a non-academic job, turn your academic CV into a shorter resume focused on skills and results relevant to that role.

What is the difference between an academic CV and a resume in length?

A resume is a short, targeted summary, usually one or two pages. An academic CV is a complete record of your academic career and can run to many pages.

Key differences:

  • A resume selects only what is relevant to the job; an academic CV lists everything in academic categories.
  • A resume focuses on achievements and skills; an academic CV focuses on publications, research, teaching and grants.
  • A resume is tailored for each job; an academic CV is updated as your career grows and adjusted lightly for each application.

Note that in many countries, including the UK, India and the Gulf, "CV" is also used to mean an ordinary one-to-two page resume. Check what the employer expects from the job advert.

CV vs Resume: What Is the Difference?

How do I cut my resume down to one page?

Cut by relevance first, then tighten wording, then adjust layout. Work through these steps:

  • Remove roles that are old or unrelated, or reduce them to one line each.
  • Keep only the three to five strongest bullets for recent roles.
  • Delete bullets that repeat the same skill or duty.
  • Shorten your summary to two or three lines.
  • Group skills on a few lines and drop basic ones such as email or internet browsing.
  • Remove "References available on request" and personal details that add nothing.
  • Finally, adjust margins and spacing slightly if needed.

Ask of every line: would the employer miss this if it were gone? If not, delete it. A focused one-page resume often reads stronger than a longer one.

How do I stop a job entry from splitting awkwardly across two pages?

Try to keep each job's title, company and dates together with at least its first few bullets. A job title alone at the bottom of page one, with all its bullets on page two, looks careless.

Ways to fix an awkward break:

  • Shorten bullets on page one so the whole entry moves up.
  • Move a short section, such as Skills, to fill the space at the bottom.
  • In a word processor, use "Keep with next" on headings and job titles.
  • Reorder sections so the break falls between sections.

It is fine for a long job entry to continue onto page two after a few bullets. The goal is that each page starts and ends cleanly.

Is a longer resume better for showing more experience?

Not necessarily. A longer resume only helps if the extra content is relevant and strong. More pages with repetitive duties, old roles or unrelated details make it harder for the reader to find what matters.

Experience is shown better by:

  • Clear job titles and progression.
  • Specific achievements with results.
  • Scope, such as team size, budget, clients or markets.

Example: "Managed a portfolio of 60 corporate clients and renewed 55 of their contracts in 2023." (Use figures only if you can verify them.)

A concise two-page resume that highlights impact usually looks more experienced than a four-page list of duties.

How long should a resume be for jobs in the UAE and Gulf?

One to two pages is common for most roles in the UAE and wider Gulf, with two pages typical for experienced professionals. Some candidates use longer CVs, but a concise, focused document is easier for busy recruiters and hiring managers to review.

Gulf CVs sometimes include extra personal details, such as nationality, visa status, driving licence and notice period. Keep these brief, on a line or two near your contact details, so they do not push important experience onto a later page.

Check the job advert or recruiter instructions. If they request a specific length or format, follow it.

How long should a resume be for jobs in India?

One page suits freshers and early-career candidates, and two pages is common for experienced professionals in India. Campus placements and some companies may ask for a single page, so check the instructions.

Tips for Indian applications:

  • Freshers: one page with education, projects, internships and skills.
  • Experienced candidates: two pages focused on recent roles and achievements.
  • Leave out long lists of personal details and a declaration paragraph unless the employer asks for them.

A focused resume is easier to read on job portals, in email and when printed for walk-in interviews.

How long should a resume be in the USA and Canada?

One page is common for early-career candidates and two pages for experienced professionals in both the USA and Canada. Canada's Job Bank suggests keeping a resume to two pages.

Tips for North American resumes:

  • Use US Letter size.
  • Focus on achievements and results.
  • Leave out personal details such as age, marital status and photos.

Senior executives, academics and federal government applicants may use longer documents. Federal government applications in the US often have their own format requirements, so follow the instructions on the application page.

How long should a resume be in Australia?

Australian resumes are often two to three pages for experienced candidates, which is a little longer than the typical North American resume. Graduates and early-career candidates often use one to two pages.

Tips:

  • Put your most relevant experience and skills on page one.
  • Use reverse chronological order.
  • Include referees or note that they are available, as is common in Australia, but keep it brief.

Whatever the length, keep it focused: a longer resume should contain more relevant detail, not more filler. Follow any length the employer specifies.

How long should a Europass CV or European CV be?

Many European employers are happy with a two-page CV, and graduates often use one or two. The Europass format, which is a free official EU tool, can produce longer documents because it includes many structured sections.

If you use Europass:

  • Remove sections you do not need.
  • Keep descriptions short and focused.
  • Check whether the employer actually asked for a Europass format; many prefer a standard CV.

In many European countries, a concise, well-organised CV plus a cover letter is the norm. Follow any length or format given in the job advert.

Should I add page numbers to my resume?

Add page numbers if your resume has two or more pages. They help if pages are printed and separated, and they show that the reader has the complete document.

Keep them small and unobtrusive, such as "Page 2 of 2" in the footer, together with your name. On a one-page resume, page numbers are unnecessary.

Do not rely on the header or footer for important information such as your contact details. Page numbers there are fine, but your name, email and phone number should appear in the main body of page one.

How do I decide what goes on page one of a two-page resume?

Put the information that best proves you fit the job on page one. That usually means:

  • Your header with name, title and contact details.
  • A short, targeted summary.
  • Key skills relevant to the job.
  • Your most recent and relevant roles, with your best achievements.

Page two can hold earlier roles, education (if you are experienced), certifications, training, languages and other supporting sections.

If a key requirement of the job, such as a licence or degree, would otherwise fall on page two, mention it on page one in your summary or skills. Readers should understand your fit from page one alone.

How long should a career changer's resume be?

One to two pages, focusing on experience relevant to the new career. Career changers often have long histories in another field, but most of the detail of unrelated roles can be shortened.

Tips:

  • Use a summary that explains your move and transferable strengths.
  • Give more space to transferable achievements, relevant projects and new qualifications.
  • Shorten older, unrelated roles to a line or two.

Example: "Retail store manager moving into HR, with six years of hiring, scheduling and staff training experience and a CIPD Level 3 qualification."

A focused resume shows a clear direction, while a long one listing everything can confuse the reader.

Career Change Resume Guide

A section heading sits alone at the bottom of my first page. How do I fix it?

Move the heading to the next page or bring some of its content up with it. A heading by itself at the bottom of a page, with all its content on the next page, looks careless and confuses readers.

Fixes:

  • Cut a line or two earlier on the page so the first entry of that section fits with its heading.
  • Add a little space above the heading so it moves to page two.
  • Reorder sections so a shorter section ends page one.
  • In a word processor, set the heading style to "Keep with next".

After any change, check the whole document again, because fixing one break can move another.

Is it OK if the second page of my resume is only half full?

Yes. A second page that is about half full or more looks normal. What looks unfinished is a second page with only a few lines, such as a lone education entry or a list of hobbies.

If page two has only a few lines:

  • Tighten page one to bring everything onto one page, or
  • Move a relevant section to page two and add genuine detail, such as projects or certifications.

Do not add filler, such as long hobby lists or a full list of school subjects, just to make page two look fuller. Half a page of relevant content is better than a full page of padding.

The job advert asks for a one-page resume, but I have a lot of experience. What should I do?

Follow the instruction and send one page. Ignoring a clear request suggests you do not follow directions, which can count against you no matter how strong your experience is.

To fit a long career onto one page:

  • Use a short summary that captures your level and specialism.
  • Detail only the last two or three relevant roles.
  • Reduce earlier roles to a single "Earlier career" line.
  • Choose the two or three strongest achievements per role.
  • List only skills that match the job.

You can mention in your cover letter, or bring to the interview, a more detailed version if the employer wants it later.

How many words should a resume have?

There is no fixed word count, but a one-page resume often holds roughly 350 to 600 words and a two-page resume roughly 700 to 1,000. These are rough ranges, not rules; what matters is how readable and relevant the content is.

If you are well above these ranges:

  • Bullets are probably too long or too many.
  • You may be describing duties instead of results.

If you are well below:

  • You may need more specific achievements, skills or projects.

Instead of counting words, check that each bullet is one or two lines, each recent role has three to six strong bullets, and the page has comfortable spacing.

Can I attach a separate list of projects or publications to keep my resume short?

Yes, in many cases. Keeping a concise resume and offering a separate project list, publication list or portfolio can work well, especially for engineers, consultants, IT professionals, researchers and designers.

Options:

  • Include a "Selected projects" or "Selected publications" section with your top three to five items, and note that a full list is available.
  • Link to a portfolio or online profile that has the full list.
  • Attach the extra document only if the application system allows multiple files.

Check the employer's instructions. Some portals accept only one file, in which case the most relevant items must be in the resume itself.

How long should a doctor's CV be?

A doctor's CV is often longer than a typical resume, commonly two to four pages or more for experienced physicians, because it includes training posts, clinical experience, qualifications, registrations, audits, research, teaching and courses.

Keep it manageable:

  • Put registration and licence details, specialty and current post near the top.
  • List clinical posts in reverse chronological order with dates and departments.
  • Use separate sections for audits, research, publications and teaching.
  • Summarise older or less relevant courses.

Follow any format specified by the employer or health authority. If your role or country requires a licence, list it with its number and expiry date as required by the regulator.
