Templates for students, mid-career and executives
I have a PhD and want an industry job. How should my resume design change?
Turn your academic CV into a concise industry resume: usually two pages, single column, with a skills-focused summary and your research presented as projects with outcomes.
Key changes:
- Replace the long publications list with a short "Selected Publications" section, or a single line noting the number and areas.
- Present your PhD as experience: what you researched, methods and tools used, and results.
- Add a skills section with technical methods, software and transferable skills such as project management.
- Remove teaching, conference and committee detail unless relevant to the job.
Use an industry-style template rather than an academic layout. The goal is to show how your research skills solve the employer's problems.
Translate academic language as you go. A phrase such as "conducted longitudinal mixed-methods analysis" may become "analysed three years of survey and interview data to find the main causes of customer churn" if that is what you did. Industry readers respond to outcomes they recognise.
