Common resume design mistakes – Page 3

Is a fancy template a mistake if my content is weak?

Yes, because design cannot make up for weak content, and a fancy template can draw attention to how little substance there is. Readers look past the design to find evidence of what you have done.

Focus on content first:

  • Replace duties with achievements and results.
  • Tailor your summary and skills to the job.
  • Add projects, training or volunteering if experience is limited.

Then choose a clean template that presents that content clearly. A simple design with strong content beats a beautiful design with vague bullets almost every time.

Should I use abbreviations to save space on my resume?

Use only widely recognised abbreviations, and use them consistently. Random or inconsistent abbreviations make a resume look rushed and can confuse both readers and keyword searches.

Good practice:

  • Write terms in full the first time if they may be unfamiliar, for example "Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)".
  • Use standard abbreviations such as "Jan", "Feb" or "UAE" consistently.
  • Avoid company-internal abbreviations that outsiders will not understand.
  • Do not abbreviate job titles, such as "Asst. Mgr.", which looks cramped.

If you are abbreviating to fit space, cutting a weak bullet is usually a better solution.

My PDF resume has different spacing from my original document. Why?

The conversion may have changed fonts, line spacing or page breaks, especially if you used a font that was not embedded, or a program that handles layout differently from your editor.

How to fix it:

  • Export directly to PDF from the program you designed in, rather than printing to PDF from another app.
  • Use common, well-supported fonts.
  • Avoid relying on manual line breaks and spaces for layout.
  • Check every page of the PDF before sending.

If you use a resume builder, preview the PDF before downloading and check the final file. The preview and the PDF should match; if anything differs, adjust the content and export again.

Is it a mistake to use a very thin or light font weight?

Usually, yes. Very thin font weights look elegant in large headings but are hard to read at body text size, on low-quality screens and when printed or photocopied.

Fix it by:

  • Using a regular weight for body text.
  • Keeping thin or light weights, if at all, for large text such as your name.
  • Checking the printed result: if strokes look faint or broken, choose a heavier weight.

Readability always comes before style. A regular-weight, clean font at a comfortable size is the safest choice for every part of your resume except perhaps the name.

How do I fix a resume design quickly before a deadline?

Focus on the few fixes that make the biggest visible difference. You can usually make a resume look much cleaner in a short time.

Quick fixes, in order:

  • Move your content into a clean single-column template.
  • Make all dates the same format and align them.
  • Use one font and one accent colour.
  • Delete empty sections and leftover placeholder text.
  • Shorten any bullet longer than two lines.
  • Check the PDF on screen and on your phone.

Using a resume builder speeds this up because the template handles fonts, spacing and alignment. You only need to check the content and the final preview.

Is it a mistake to use a table for the whole layout of my resume?

It often is. Building the entire resume inside a table, with cells for dates, titles and sidebars, can look neat in your editor but cause problems elsewhere. Tables may be read cell by cell in an unexpected order, borders can appear when printed, and the layout can shift when opened in another program.

Better approach:

  • Use normal paragraphs and a single-column structure.
  • Align dates with a right-aligned tab stop, not table cells.
  • If you use a builder, let the template handle layout.

If you keep a table, make sure it has no visible borders, a simple structure and that the text still reads in a sensible order when copied into a plain text editor.

Why does my resume look unbalanced, with everything crowded on the left?

This usually happens when dates, locations and other details sit next to job titles on the left, leaving a large empty strip on the right. The page then feels lopsided.

Fixes:

  • Move dates to the right margin with a right-aligned tab or the template's date position.
  • Put location next to the dates on the right, or under the company name.
  • Use the full width for bullets.

Balance does not mean filling every corner; it means the page looks evenly weighted. Hold it at arm's length and see whether one side feels heavier than the other.

Is it a mistake to change the template design for every job application?

It is not a mistake, but it is usually unnecessary work. Tailoring matters most in the content: the title line, summary, skills and bullet choices. The design can stay the same for most applications.

When a design change makes sense:

  • Moving from a conservative industry to a creative one, or the reverse.
  • Applying through an online portal, where a simpler single-column version is safer.
  • An employer or region expecting a specific style.

Keep one or two well-tested designs and reuse them. Each new design needs checking for alignment, page breaks and readability, which takes time you could spend tailoring the content.
