Resume Templates and Design
Template conventions by region
Resume design habits differ from one country to another. Page size, whether a photo is common, which personal details appear and how long a CV tends to be all vary between the Gulf, the UK, the US, Europe, India and other regions. This topic explains these conventions as common practice, so you can adapt one clean template to each market. Practice also varies between employers in the same country, especially between local firms and multinationals, so always check the instructions in the job advert. Where official guidance exists, such as in the UK and Canada, the answers say so.
How do resume design conventions differ around the world?
The core of a good resume is the same everywhere: clear structure, relevant experience and readable text. What differs by region is mainly page size, whether a photo is common, which personal details are included and how long the document tends to be.
Broad patterns, which vary by employer:
- US and Canada: US Letter paper, no photo, few personal details, concise resumes.
- UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand: A4, usually no photo, few personal details, two pages common for experienced candidates.
- Gulf countries: A4, photo and personal details such as nationality and visa status often included, sometimes longer CVs.
- Continental Europe: A4, practice on photos varies by country and employer, tabular layouts common in some countries.
- India and Pakistan: A4, more personal details in traditional formats, though multinational employers often prefer international-style resumes.
A clean single-column template works in all of these. Adjust page size and personal details for each market, and always follow the employer's own instructions.
Should I use A4 or US Letter for my resume?
Use US Letter for jobs in the US and Canada, and A4 almost everywhere else, including the UAE and wider Gulf, the UK, Ireland, Europe, India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and most of Asia.
Why it matters:
- If your resume is printed, the wrong size can cut off margins or leave odd gaps at the bottom.
- Using the local size shows attention to detail and familiarity with the market.
For online-only applications, the difference is rarely noticed on screen, but it costs nothing to get right. ResumeBuilder.ae supports both A4 and US Letter, so you can keep one version of each.
After changing size, check the preview: page breaks, line endings and whether a one-page resume still fits on one page can all shift slightly.
What is the difference between A4 and US Letter paper sizes?
A4 is 210 by 297 millimetres; US Letter is 8.5 by 11 inches, about 216 by 279 millimetres. A4 is slightly narrower and noticeably taller.
What this means for your resume:
- Content that fits on one A4 page may spill onto a second Letter page, because Letter is shorter.
- Content designed for Letter may leave a small empty strip at the bottom of an A4 page.
- Line endings can shift a little because of the width difference.
Neither size is better; they are regional standards. Choose the size used in the country of the job, and always check page breaks after switching.
What happens if I send a US Letter resume to an employer in the UK or the Gulf?
Usually nothing serious. On screen, few people notice. If printed on A4, the page may show a slightly larger bottom margin or slightly narrower side margins.
The small risks:
- Some printing settings may scale the page, making text a little smaller.
- An attentive reader may notice it is formatted for another market.
It is easy to avoid: switch your template's page size to A4 before exporting, check the page breaks and save a separate version. For applications in the UK, the Gulf, Europe, India and most other countries, A4 is the expected standard.
Which countries use US Letter paper for resumes?
US Letter is standard mainly in the United States and Canada. It is also used in some countries in Latin America and in the Philippines, alongside other sizes, but A4 is the international norm in most other places.
A practical rule:
- US or Canadian employer: US Letter.
- Everywhere else: A4, unless the employer asks otherwise.
If you are in the Philippines or another country where both sizes are seen, follow the employer's instructions or use the size common in their office. For multinational companies, use the size of the country where the job is based.
Do employers in the UAE and Gulf expect A4 CVs?
Yes, A4 is the standard paper size across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. Use A4 for any CV aimed at Gulf employers, recruitment agencies or walk-in interviews.
Related habits common in the region:
- CVs are often printed for interviews, so A4 avoids scaling problems.
- Two pages is common for experienced candidates.
- Personal details such as nationality, visa status and notice period are often included.
Practice varies by employer, especially between multinational companies and local firms, so follow any instructions in the job advert.
What does a typical CV look like for jobs in the UAE and the Gulf?
A typical Gulf CV is an A4 document, often two pages, with a clear header, a short professional summary, reverse-chronological experience and a personal details block that is less common in Western resumes.
Common features, which vary by employer:
- Contact details with a phone number including country code and the city you are based in.
- Personal details such as nationality, visa status, driving licence and notice period.
- A summary naming years of experience and GCC or regional exposure.
- Experience with clear dates, employer locations and achievement bullets.
- Languages, especially English and Arabic, with levels.
- A photo in some applications, particularly for customer-facing roles, though many employers do not require one.
Multinational companies and large employers often use online portals, so a clean single-column layout is still the safest base. Keep the personal details accurate and relevant, and follow the instructions in each job advert.
Is a photo expected on a CV in the UAE?
A photo is common on UAE CVs but not universally expected. Many local employers and agencies are used to seeing one, while many multinational companies do not require it and recruit through online systems.
What to consider:
- Customer-facing roles, such as hospitality, retail and airlines, more often ask for a photo, sometimes separately from the CV.
- If the job advert asks for a photo, follow it.
- If it does not, a CV without a photo is generally acceptable.
ResumeBuilder.ae does not include photos in the PDF, which keeps the text easier for applicant tracking software to read. If an employer requests a photo, you can usually upload or attach it separately as they instruct.
Do Saudi employers expect personal details on a CV?
Many Saudi employers are used to CVs with a personal details block, such as nationality, current location, languages and sometimes iqama or visa status. Multinational companies may need less. Practice varies by employer.
Design tips:
- Put personal details in a compact block under your contact details or at the end.
- Include only details that are relevant to the application, for example nationality and transferability of residency where it matters for hiring.
- Use A4 and a clean single-column layout.
- Consider an Arabic version for local employers or government-related entities, if requested.
Follow the job advert's instructions, and avoid sharing sensitive identity numbers unless the employer specifically asks through a secure process.
Where should nationality and visa status go in a Gulf CV layout?
Put them in a short personal details block, either directly under your contact details or in a small section near the end. Keep them on one or two lines.
Example:
"Nationality: Indian | Visa status: UAE residence visa (employment) | Notice period: 30 days | Driving licence: UAE"
Tips:
- Keep the block compact so it does not push your summary down too far.
- Include only details that are accurate and useful for the employer.
- Leave these details out when applying to countries where they are not commonly included, such as the UK, US, Canada and Australia.
ResumeBuilder.ae offers optional fields for nationality, work authorization or visa status, driving licence and notice period.
Do Gulf CVs tend to be longer than Western resumes?
Often, yes. Gulf CVs commonly run to two pages, and sometimes more for senior or technical professionals, partly because they include personal details, project lists and certifications that Western resumes may leave out.
But length is not a goal in itself:
- Two well-organised pages are better than three padded ones.
- Recent roles should get the most detail.
- Older roles can be condensed into short entries.
Many Gulf recruiters and hiring managers review CVs quickly, so make your most relevant experience visible on the first page.
Should a CV for the Gulf be bilingual in English and Arabic?
Usually an English CV is enough for most private-sector jobs in the Gulf. An Arabic CV, or an Arabic version alongside the English one, can help for government, semi-government and some local employers, especially if the advert is in Arabic.
Practical approach:
- Keep two separate documents rather than mixing both languages on one page.
- Make sure both versions say exactly the same thing.
- Use a right-to-left layout for the Arabic version.
ResumeBuilder.ae lets you choose Arabic as the resume language on the Design tab, laying out the PDF right to left. Ask a fluent speaker to review the Arabic version before sending.
Are CV conventions different in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman compared with the UAE?
They are broadly similar across the Gulf: A4 paper, a personal details block, clear dates and often two pages. Differences tend to come more from the employer type than from the country.
What varies more:
- Government and semi-government employers often have their own forms or portals and may prefer Arabic.
- Local family businesses may expect more personal details.
- Multinational companies often prefer international-style, more concise resumes.
Use a clean Gulf-style CV as your base and adjust personal details and language for each application. Always follow the instructions in the job advert.
What CV design conventions are common in Egypt?
CVs in Egypt are usually A4, often one to two pages, with a personal details section that may include nationality, military service status for men where relevant, and languages. Multinational employers tend to prefer concise, international-style resumes.
Common habits:
- English CVs for multinational and private-sector roles; Arabic for some local and public employers.
- Education shown clearly, often with grades for recent graduates.
- A photo is seen in some applications but is not required by many employers.
Follow the job advert's instructions, and keep personal details limited to what employers in your target sector usually expect.
What are the design conventions for a UK CV?
A UK CV is usually an A4 document of up to two pages, with a clean, simple layout and no photo. Personal details are kept to contact information.
Common features:
- Contact details at the top, optionally with a professional profile link.
- A short personal statement or profile.
- Work history in reverse-chronological order.
- Education, skills and optional references.
The National Careers Service advises leaving out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Keep design restrained: a single column with one accent colour at most suits most UK employers, many of whom use online application systems.

Should I put a photo on a CV for a UK job?
Generally no. Photos are not standard on UK CVs, and most employers do not expect one. Leaving it out keeps the focus on your skills and experience.
Exceptions are rare and usually stated in the advert, for example acting, modelling or some presenting roles, where a headshot is part of the application.
UK equality law protects characteristics such as age, race and sex at work, and many employers prefer not to receive information like photos that is irrelevant to whether someone is qualified. Use the space for a strong profile and achievements instead.

What are CV design conventions in Ireland?
Irish CVs are similar to UK CVs: A4, usually two pages or less, clean layout, no photo, and minimal personal details beyond contact information.
Common features:
- A short profile at the top.
- Reverse-chronological work history with achievements.
- Education and training.
- Skills and, optionally, references or "References available on request".
Multinational employers in Ireland often recruit through online systems, so a simple single-column layout works well. Follow any instructions in the job advert, particularly for public-sector roles that may use application forms.
What are the design conventions for a US resume?
A US resume is usually on US Letter paper, one page for early-career candidates and up to two pages for experienced ones, with no photo and very few personal details.
Common features:
- Name and contact details at the top: email, phone, city and state, and a professional profile link.
- A brief summary.
- Experience with achievement bullets, often quantified.
- Education and skills.
Design is typically clean and conservative, with a single column. Date of birth, marital status, photos and similar details are not expected. The US Department of Labor's CareerOneStop guide is a useful official reference on resume sections and formatting.

Why do US resumes usually leave out photos and personal details?
Because US hiring decisions must not be based on characteristics such as race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 and over), disability or genetic information. A photo or personal details can reveal those traits, which are irrelevant to whether someone is qualified.
As a result:
- Most US employers do not expect a photo, date of birth, marital status or nationality on a resume.
- Some prefer not to receive them at all.
Keep your US resume focused on contact details, experience, education and skills. If a role genuinely needs a headshot, such as acting, the advert will usually say so.

What are resume design conventions in Canada?
Canadian resumes are usually on US Letter paper, up to two pages, with a clean layout and no photo. Personal details are kept to contact information.
Official Canadian guidance from Job Bank advises:
- Leaving out age, height, weight, marital status, religion and political views.
- Not including a photo, as it is not the norm in Canada.
- Never including your Social Insurance Number.
- Keeping to two pages and minimising jobs older than about 15 years.
A single-column template with standard headings suits Canadian employers, many of whom use online application systems.
In Quebec, French-language roles may expect a French resume, so match the language of the job advert. Elsewhere in Canada, English is standard for most roles, and Canadian spelling, which mixes British and American habits, is acceptable either way as long as you are consistent.

Common features:
- A brief career summary.
- Key skills or a short list of strengths.
- Reverse-chronological experience with achievements.
- Education and certifications.
- Referees are often provided on request or listed at the end.

What do German CVs usually look like?
A German CV (Lebenslauf) is traditionally a structured, often tabular A4 document with dates on the left and details on the right, typically one to two pages. Photos have traditionally been common but are increasingly treated as optional.
Common habits:
- Clear, consistent dates, often in month/year format.
- Personal details kept relatively brief in modern CVs.
- Sometimes a place, date and signature at the end in traditional formats.
- Applications often sent as a package with a cover letter and certificates.
Many employers no longer expect a photo, and German equal treatment law prohibits discrimination on grounds such as age, gender and ethnic origin in recruitment, with applicants covered. Follow each employer's instructions.

Common habits:
- A clear title line under your name stating the role you are targeting.
- Experience and education in reverse-chronological order.

Clean, modern templates are widely accepted. Write in French for French-language roles; ResumeBuilder.ae supports French as a resume language. Check each employer's instructions, since practice varies.
What are CV conventions in the Netherlands?
Dutch CVs are usually A4, around one to two pages, clear and direct in style. Photos are sometimes included but are not required by many employers.
Common habits:
- A short profile at the top.
- Reverse-chronological experience and education.
- A skills and languages section, often showing Dutch and English levels.
- Concise, factual wording.
Many Dutch employers, especially international companies, recruit in English and through online systems, so a clean single-column layout works well. Follow the language and format requested in the job advert.

Spanish CVs are usually A4 and one to two pages. Photos have traditionally been common but many employers now treat them as optional, especially multinationals.
Common habits:
- A clear personal details and contact section at the top.
- Education and experience in reverse-chronological order.
- A languages section with levels.
- Software and other skills grouped together.
