Action verbs and strong wording

Which action verbs can students and graduates use?

Use verbs that fit study, projects, part-time work and activities: researched, presented, organised, created, led, volunteered, tutored, built, tested and served.

Examples:

  • "Researched consumer attitudes to plastic packaging for a final-year project."
  • "Presented project findings to a panel of lecturers and industry guests."
  • "Organised a charity football tournament for 16 teams."
  • "Tutored 4 younger students in mathematics."
  • "Built a portfolio website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript."
  • "Served customers at a busy café during weekend shifts."

Avoid passive phrases such as "was taught" or "was given the task of". Show what you did yourself.

If you have little paid work, these verbs let you present study projects, clubs, sports and volunteering with the same confidence as a job. Keep each claim small and true; a modest, specific bullet is more convincing than a big, vague one.
