Professional summaries

Should my resume summary be in first person or third person?

Use the implied first person: write as if "I" is the subject, but leave the "I" out. This is the most common style on resumes in most countries, and it keeps sentences short.

Compare:

  • Full first person: "I am a marketing executive with six years of experience. I manage campaigns..."
  • Third person: "Sara is a marketing executive who manages..."
  • Implied first person: "Marketing executive with 6 years' experience. Manage paid and organic campaigns for B2B software brands."

Third person can sound odd, as if someone else wrote about you, so most people avoid it on a resume. Full first person is acceptable in some places, such as a LinkedIn About section or a cover letter, but on a resume the implied style reads more cleanly. Whichever you choose, stay consistent across the whole summary.
