Resume Writing and Summaries

Objective statements

An objective statement tells an employer what kind of job you want and what you can offer in it. Many experienced candidates now use a professional summary instead, but a short, targeted objective still helps students, fresh graduates, career changers and people returning to work. This guide explains when an objective makes sense, how it differs from a summary, which old-fashioned phrases to drop and how to tailor one in a minute. It includes fictional example objectives for many fields, from retail and hospitality to nursing, engineering and IT, for you to adapt with your own true details.

What is an objective statement on a resume?

An objective statement is one or two sentences at the top of a resume that say what type of job you are looking for and what you can offer in it. It was common on older resumes and is still used by students, graduates and career changers.

A modern objective is short and focused on the employer:

  • The role you are applying for.
  • One or two relevant skills, qualifications or experiences.
  • What you aim to contribute.

Example: "Accounting graduate seeking an entry-level accounts payable role where I can apply strong Excel skills and internship experience in invoice processing."

An older-style objective focuses only on what the applicant wants, for example "To obtain a challenging position with growth opportunities." That style adds little and is best avoided.

Are objective statements outdated?

The old style is outdated, but a short, targeted objective can still be useful in some situations. Most experienced candidates now use a professional summary instead.

Outdated style:

  • Generic: "Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic organisation."
  • Self-focused: it talks only about what you want.
  • Long: three or four lines with no facts.

When a modern objective still makes sense:

  • You are a student or recent graduate with little experience.
  • You are changing careers and need to state your new direction.
  • You are applying to a general pool, such as a graduate scheme or a job fair, and need to say what kind of role you want.

If you use one, keep it to one or two lines and include something concrete about what you bring.

What is the difference between a resume objective and a professional summary?

An objective states the job you want and what you hope to contribute; a summary describes the experience and strengths you already have. In short, an objective looks forward, and a summary looks back at your track record.

Main differences:

  • Focus: objective = your target role; summary = your proven value.
  • Best for: objective = students, graduates and career changers; summary = people with relevant experience.
  • Length: objective = one or two sentences; summary = three to five lines.

Objective example: "Recent hospitality graduate seeking a front office role in a city hotel, bringing internship experience in guest check-in and fluency in English and French."

Summary example: "Front office supervisor with 6 years in 4- and 5-star hotels. Lead a team of 8 agents and manage VIP arrivals in Opera PMS."

If you have relevant experience, a summary is usually the stronger choice. If you are just starting out or changing direction, a well-written objective can help. You can also blend them: a summary with a final short phrase stating your target role.

When does it make sense to use an objective instead of a summary?

Use an objective when your experience does not yet show the job you want, so the reader needs you to state your direction.

Situations where an objective helps:

  • You are a student or fresh graduate with no full-time experience.
  • You are changing careers, for example from teaching to HR.
  • You are applying to a general recruitment pool and need to name the type of role.
  • You are re-entering the workforce in a different field after a break.

Situations where a summary is better:

  • You have relevant experience in the same field.
  • Your job titles already show your path clearly.

Example (career change objective): "Retail store manager moving into HR, seeking an HR assistant role. Experienced in hiring, scheduling and training staff, and currently completing a CIPD Level 3 certificate."

Should a fresh graduate use an objective or a summary?

Either can work; what matters is that it is specific. Many graduates now write a short summary based on their degree, internships and projects, but a focused objective is also fine.

Choose an objective if:

  • You want to state a specific target role, such as a graduate trainee programme.
  • You have little practical experience to summarise.

Choose a summary if:

  • You have internships, part-time jobs or substantial projects to highlight.

Objective example: "Civil engineering graduate (2025) seeking a site engineer trainee role, bringing a summer placement on a residential project and strong AutoCAD skills."

Summary example: "Civil engineering graduate with a three-month site placement supporting setting out and concrete inspections. Final-year project on drainage design."

Both are short and factual. Avoid vague lines about wanting "growth opportunities".

How do I write a resume objective step by step?

Write one or two sentences that name the role you want, give your most relevant qualification or experience, and say what you will contribute.

Steps:

  • Start with who you are now: "Final-year nursing student", "Recent IT graduate", "Experienced teacher moving into training".
  • Name the target role, using the job advert's title: "seeking a junior data analyst position".
  • Add your strongest relevant evidence: an internship, a project, a course or a transferable skill.
  • Finish with what you will bring: "to support the finance team with accurate reporting".
  • Cut filler words like "dynamic", "challenging" and "reputable".

Example: "Recent marketing graduate seeking a digital marketing assistant role. Ran Instagram and email campaigns for a student society and completed the Google Digital Marketing certificate. Ready to support campaign reporting and content scheduling."

Read it aloud. If it would fit any applicant for any job, make it more specific to you and to this role.

How long should a resume objective be?

One or two sentences, or about 20 to 50 words. An objective should be quick to read and give the reader just enough context before your education or experience.

If your objective is getting longer than three lines, it is probably:

  • Repeating details that belong in other sections.
  • Listing personal qualities without evidence.
  • Explaining your life story or reasons for applying, which belong in a cover letter.

Example (good length): "Business graduate seeking an entry-level procurement role, with internship experience in supplier data entry and strong negotiation skills from student union events."

Keep it short and let the rest of your resume carry the detail.

Can you give examples of good resume objectives for students?

Yes. Good student objectives name a specific role, mention a relevant course, project or activity, and say what the student can offer.

Examples:

  • Retail: "High school student seeking a weekend sales assistant role. Experienced in helping customers at a family business and comfortable using a card machine."
  • Office internship: "Second-year business student seeking a summer office internship. Organised events for the university's business club and confident with Excel and PowerPoint."
  • IT: "Computer science student seeking a part-time IT helpdesk role. Built and maintain computers for family and friends and completed the CompTIA A+ course."
  • Hospitality: "Hospitality diploma student seeking a part-time waiter role in a hotel restaurant. Trained in food safety and table service during college practicals."
  • Tutoring: "Mathematics undergraduate seeking a tutoring role for secondary students. Tutored three students through their exams last year."

Each one is short, specific and honest. Change the details to match your own experience and the job advert.

What is a good objective for a career changer?

Name the new role, point to the skills that transfer and mention any training you have done for the new field. This helps the reader understand why someone from another background is applying.

Examples:

  • Teacher to corporate trainer: "Secondary school teacher with 7 years of classroom experience seeking a corporate trainer role. Skilled in designing lessons, presenting to groups and assessing progress; recently completed a certificate in adult learning."
  • Hospitality to sales: "Hotel guest relations supervisor seeking a B2B sales role in travel. Experienced in building client relationships and handling corporate bookings."
  • Nurse to healthcare IT: "Registered nurse with 5 years in ICU moving into clinical informatics. Super-user for the hospital's electronic records system and trained 40 colleagues on new modules."

Keep the focus on what you bring, not only on why you want a change.

What should an objective for an internship application say?

Name the internship area, your course and year, and one or two relevant skills or experiences. Keep it short and practical.

Examples:

  • Finance: "Third-year finance student seeking a summer internship in corporate banking. Completed coursework in financial modelling and analysed a listed company's accounts for a class project."
  • Engineering: "Mechanical engineering student seeking a six-month industrial placement in maintenance or manufacturing. Experienced with SolidWorks from a team design project."
  • Marketing: "Media student seeking a marketing internship. Managed social media for a student theatre group and made short promotional videos."

Mention your availability (for example "from June to August") if the internship has fixed dates. This saves the recruiter time.

How do I write an objective for my first job with no experience?

Name the type of job you want, then mention something you have done that shows you can do it: school, volunteering, a hobby or helping at home or in a family business.

Examples:

  • "School leaver seeking a warehouse assistant role. Fit, reliable and used to lifting and organising stock at a family grocery shop."
  • "Recent graduate seeking a first customer service job. Volunteered at a community centre answering phones and helping visitors."
  • "Diploma holder seeking an entry-level electrician's helper position. Completed practical training in domestic wiring and basic safety."

Avoid claims like "I am the best candidate" or "I learn anything quickly". Use small, real examples instead.

What objective should I use when returning to work after a long break?

State the role you want and the experience you bring, and if helpful, mention recent training that shows you are up to date. You do not need to explain the break in the objective.

Examples:

  • "Experienced administrative assistant returning to work, seeking a part-time office role. Brings 6 years of office experience and recently refreshed Microsoft 365 skills through an online course."
  • "Former primary teacher seeking a teaching assistant role after a career break. Volunteered weekly in a school reading programme over the past year."

Keep it positive and practical. Give dates in your experience section honestly, and prepare a short explanation of your break for the interview.

Should I write an objective if I am relocating to a new country?

It can help, because it tells local employers you intend to move and what kind of work you want. Keep it factual and focused on your skills.

Example: "Qualified electrician with 9 years' experience in India, relocating to the UAE in March and seeking a maintenance electrician role in facilities management."

What to include:

  • The type of role you are targeting.
  • Your relevant experience and qualifications.
  • When you will be available, if relocation is planned.

Keep details such as visa status or notice period in your personal details section, where many employers expect to find them. Do not state a visa or work permit status you do not yet have.

What is a good objective for a part-time job?

  • "Parent returning to work, seeking a part-time receptionist role during school hours. Brings 4 years of front desk experience in a dental clinic."

What objective should I use for a job fair or a general application?

Name the area or type of roles you are interested in, rather than one specific job. This helps a recruiter at a job fair or a general inbox place you in the right department.

Examples:

  • "Finance graduate seeking entry-level roles in accounts payable, receivable or treasury operations."
  • "Experienced hospitality supervisor seeking front office or guest relations roles in luxury hotels."

Keep it focused on one field. A general application that says "any suitable position" makes it hard for the employer to see where you fit. Bring a separate version for each field if you are interested in more than one.
