Freelance, self-employment and gig work

I worked through an umbrella company or my own limited company. Whose name goes on the resume?

List the client you worked for as the main employer name, and mention the contracting arrangement in brackets if useful. The client's name tells readers where you gained your experience.

Examples:

  • "IT Project Manager (contract via own limited company), Northbank Insurance, 2023 – 2025"
  • "Data Analyst (contractor), City Council, 2024 – 2025"

If you had several short client contracts under your own company, you can group them:
"Independent Data Consultant, Smith Analytics Ltd, 2021 – Present

  • Client: Northbank Insurance (12 months)…
  • Client: City Council (8 months)…"

Keep details consistent with what your contracts say, as some employers verify contracting history. Tax and employment status rules for contractors are a separate matter; this is only about how to present the work clearly.
